Author Interview – 20 Questions with Amazon Indie Author Eden Redd

Twenty questions with Eden Redd

If you could go back in time and tell your younger writing self one thing, what would it be?

Stop doubting yourself and your writing. Make the time and have faith in in yourself, you will get better.

How did you spend the first bit of money you earned as a published author?

Bought a thirty-dollar bottle of wine and drank it down the same evening.

How many unfinished or unpublished books do you have?

I have several half-finished stories and one half finished romance novel. The novel was too…ugh…normal for my tastes.

What is your writing process? Or, how many hours a day do you write?

Big cup of coffee and typing at the kitchen table. I write three to four days a week and my minimum word count is 5K. When I finish a novel, I celebrate with wine…and sometimes whiskey. (Not together. Celebration may be a two-night event.)

What was your favorite childhood book(s)? Why? Genie and the Witch’s Spells. I didn’t fit in much and identified too much with the main character.

On average, how long does it take you to write a book? (First draft, rewrites, edits to finally publishing)

Three weeks to a month.

We all get bad reviews sometimes when we publish.  How do you deal with bad reviews?

Ignore them and when I can’t, I make a character I hate in my books and do terrible things to them.

How would you describe your average reader?  Or, do you even have a particular kind of person in mind when you write?

I would say my readers like action, adventure, fantasy and sexy romantic fun (Insert perverted fun somewhere in there.)

What are your hardest scenes to write?

Drawn out build up scenes. I yell in my head “Get to the damn point!” all the time.

What is the best way you’ve found to market your books?

I haven’t. The search continues.

What do you think are the challenges facing new writers?

Dedication to writing more books. Often, many authors believe they will become successful after a book or three. Sometimes it takes more so keep writing.

What are some things you’ve had to sacrifice in order to write and publish?

My sanity but we weren’t on the best terms anyway.

How often do you read for pleasure? How many books a year do you read?

Rarely. Writing takes up most of my time.  How fast do you read (words per minute)? Pretty fast but remembering what I read is the hard part.

Many indie authors live and die by KU (Kindle Unlimited) and the “normalized page read).  What are your views on KU, Amazon and where do you think KU will head in the future?

It’s great for exposure but will turn into crutch as you grow your career. You have to carve out your own fanbase and when you do, you will have greater influence on your future. I see authors tear themselves apart depending on what the KU payout will be. No one needs that stress in their lives.

Many writers find editing drafts as frustrating.  How do you edit and what is your process?

I find writing the book is the hardest part. Editing is fun because it’s like sculpting your work into a masterpiece. I send my work to an editor and then I reread it two, maybe three times before publishing.

What software do you use to write?

Word.

Fans often have a preconceived notion of you.  What is one thing your fans would be surprised to learn if they really knew you or spent the whole day by your side?

I’m pretty boring. My everday life is very normal with small swells of gatherings over drinks and other times being home and watching a good movie.

What did it feel like to publish your first book?

Exhilarating!

What are some of the difficulties of writing characters of the opposite sex?

I sometimes don’t understand the thought process of a male character. Thankfully I have many guys friends that help me with advice.

If they turned your life into a movie, who would you want to play you? Why?

Cassandra Peterson with her Elvira character. We have the same sense of humor and taste in clothes. Or if closer to how people see me, Julianne Moore.
